The challenge

What this project had to solve.

The challenge: the homeowners wanted real rental income and flexible space, but they didn't want a backyard unit that looked like an afterthought or stalled in permitting. What we did: we designed the ADU to match the main house in material and detail, sized and laid it out to meet California's ADU rules, and carried it through design, permit, and construction as one continuous engagement. The result: a self-contained, design-matched unit that adds genuine flexible space and income potential without compromising the property.

Scope of work

We took a detached accessory dwelling unit in Carmel Valley from design through permitting to a finished, move-in-ready build. The result is a self-contained one-bedroom with its own kitchen, full bath, white oak flooring, quartz counters, and energy-efficient windows — designed from the start to read as part of the property rather than a bolt-on. Materials and proportions were chosen to echo the main home, and the design was shaped around California's ADU requirements so permitting moved cleanly.
